SATURDAY LAST GYRO HOLIDAY - Prominent Members of Outside Cluibs
Participate in Installation at Kimberley
Saturday last was a Gyro holiday - a red letter day for the local
clubs in Cranbrook and Kimberley, the latter taking precedence in point of
place, the occasion being the installation of officers at the recently
formed branch in the mining town. But,of course, Cranbrook Gyros were
interested. As one well known member of the Cranbrook branch put it, "we
were out to show our brothers from Calgary, Lethbridge and Nelson a good
time." No question about it, the visitors - they were many, ten booking
from Calgary alone - had a good time. Scarcely had the train pulled into
the station at Cranbrook when the visitors were pounced upon to be carried
off to luncheon in the K. of P. Hall as guests of the Cranbrook crowd. The
visitors held the keys of the city. And by the same token, they entered
into the spirit of things with a vengeance. Learning what the Saturday
matinee of the Rotary club was toward, nothing would suffice but they would
lend their orchestra for the occasion. The Rotarians were nothing loth.
"We are entertaining a flock of kids," said the Knights of the Wheel, "come
one, come all - it isn't every day we have an honest-to-goodness city band
perform for our benefit." So it befell that the visiting Gyros were in on
the Rotary Minstrel's matinee with bells on.
At Kimberley the visitors met with an equally cordial reception.
Accompanied by their escort, the Cranbrook Gyros, the visitors entered the
Butte of the Kootenays with éclat. It was Gyro night in Kimberley. The
welcome mat lay at the door of the Oddfellow's hall, the scene of a
noteworthy gathering, namely, the banquet in honor of the installation of
the officers of the Kimberley Gyro Club. Trust Kimberley to see to it that
the "eats" were forthcoming. The best in none too good for our guests has
ever been Kimberley's motto. And the hardrock men full sustained their
enviable reputation for lavish hospitality. As for the after proceedings,
the toast list speaks for itself. Here it is -
Chairman - Gyro Doctor Fergie, president of the Cranbrook Club.
Toast - The King.
Song - Les. Dwelley.
Toast "Gyro" - proposed by Gyro Arthur Lilly. Response Gyro Clarence
H. Lougheed, International Vice-President.
Musical Selections - Calgary Gyro Orchestra.
Installation Ceremony and Address - Gyro John Mavor, K.C., Past
President Calgary Club.
Presentation of Charter, Gavel and Emblems - Gyro "Bill" Myers,
Lieutenant-Governor District 8.
Piano Selection - Gyro Tom Shaw.
Toast, "Our Sponsors, Visiting Gyros and Guests" - Proposed by Gyro
M.E. Tiffin. Response, Gyro Bill Wilson, president Calgary Club; Gyro Ned
Hanley, Nelson Club; Gyro Lyn Fairburn, Lethbridge Club; T. Summers,
president Kimberley Board of Trade and others.
Musical Selections - Calgary Gyro Orchestra.
KIMBERLEY GYRO OFFICERS, 1926
President Norman Burdett; Vice-President, M.E. Tiffin; Secretary, F.
Grady; Treasurer, R.F. MacKay; Directors - H.W. Poole, R.H. Edmonds, E.E.
Jackson, P. Johnson.
Before leaving for their home the visitors were given full
opportunity to view at close range the source of natural wealth that has
brought East Kootenay into prominence in the mining world. They carried
back with them vivid impressions of all they saw to the conjuring up of
mental pictures of the city which Kimberley will develop into within the
span of the present decade. Quite apart from the social side it presents,
the recent Gyro frolic was an excellent bit of district advertising quite
on a par with the visit of the Associated Boards of Trade last summer.
District service clubs are performing a very real and valuable service in
bringing to the notice of the outside world the potential wealth of East
Kootenay. Reading descriptions of the Sullivan Mine is one thing, to see
it in operation is quite another. The thanks of the district are due the
Gyros of Kimberley and Cranbrook.
