British Columbia Resources Investment Corporation - Certificate
British Columbia Resources Investment Corporation - Certificate for 5 shares issued August 7, 1979 by the B.C.Provincial Government. Front and back of certificate shown. The British Columbia Resources Investment Corporation, or BCRIC (pronounced "brick") was a holding company formed under the government of William R. Bennett. The company took over ownership of various sawmills and mines that had been bought and bailed out by the government. The name was eventually changed to Westar Group Ltd. The most famous aspect of the company were the five free bearer shares, dated August 7, 1979 that were distributed to all British Columbians, to promote investment in the province, and earn back a profit to the buyer. British Columbians and investors were encouraged to buy more. The company expanded, and bought numerous mining and logging installations. Unfortunately, because of significant investment in a North Sea oil play by a subsidiary, Westar Petroleum, as well as bad timing in a mining investment by another subsidiary, Westar Mining, the company ran into financial trouble. Investors saw their thousands of dollars dwindle to pennies. In 1995, the shares were consolidated at a ratio of 125 to 1. At that time, 5 bearer shares were worth .008 (or 0.8%) of one post-consolidation share. In June 1997, the consolidated shares were subject to a compulsory buy-out at $70 each (i.e. 56 cents per bearer share) as part of a privatization transaction by the Jim Pattison Group. However, the buyout had a 10 year limit which expired on June 30, 2007 and, as a result, outstanding share certificates no longer have any value

Rossland Ladies Hockey Team 1900
Ladies Hockey Team in old Rossland Arena 1900. The Rossland Ladies Hockey Team was originally formed as a "novelty" for Rossland's 3rd Winter Carnival in 1900. Rossland remained virtually undefeated in organized play for the next 17 years, disbanding in 1918 due to WW1 and the Spanish influenza epidemic. In 2014 the Rossland Ladies Hockey Team received the Pioneer Award from the BC Hockey Hall of Fame, then formally recognized for their accomplishments by the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. Bailey and Battensby Sawmill
The Murdoch Bailey and Battensby sawmill situated at the Fisher place at Albreda, where the Lenko house is now. Crew of men pictured are Jules Frye, Mike Frye, Virgil Kimmel, Fred Frye, Murdock Bailey, Sambo, Smith, Charlie Frye. Mrs. Battensby was sometimes cook, otherwise Murdock cooked. Lumber was hauled by an old Ford truck to Atkin's planer at Cedarside. It was noted Murdock lost his hair in the 1918 flu epidemic.
