Doukhobors Back in the News

Doukhobors back in the news, showing a much-used photo of Doukhobor women yoked to a plough. The text is racist and exclusionary. In the first days of Doukhobor settlement the men of the villages went off to earn money while the women and older people were left to get in gardens and crops. In the beginning the villages were unable to finance work animals.

Verigin Farewell

Farewell for Peter "Lordly" Verigin at Brilliant in 1924. Peter Verigin was killed in a train explosion at Farron, B.C. He was eventually laid to rest in a tomb above Brilliant, lookig out on the joining of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers and the incredibly fertile community that he had helped to foster at Brilliant (and at other sites in West Kootenay).

Peter Vasilevich Verigin often known as Peter "the Lordly" Verigin (July 12 [O.S. June 29] 1859 - October 29, 1924) was a Russian philosopher, activist and preacher of the Doukhobors. Peter Lordly was a spiritual leader of the Doukhobors from 1887-1924.
