Doukhobor Communal House

Presumed to be located in the Castlegar area, this old structure is part of the u-shaped outbuildings that connected two communal homes in a Doukhobor village. There were almost always two arches, one on either end of the l;ong side of the "u", providing access to the inner courtyard of the village.

Doukhobors Back in the News

Doukhobors back in the news, showing a much-used photo of Doukhobor women yoked to a plough. The text is racist and exclusionary. In the first days of Doukhobor settlement the men of the villages went off to earn money while the women and older people were left to get in gardens and crops. In the beginning the villages were unable to finance work animals.

Vasily (Bill) Bonderoff in his artisan workshop onhis farm south of Salmo, B.C. Bill is holding one of the model spinning wheels, complete with spinner's bench, that he was renowned for. To the far left are a number of rawq wheels hanging on the wall, and overhead are a number of blank ladles that Bill was also well known for throughout the Columbia Basin. Front right is one of the custom machines that he also made (being a retired blacksmith) for routing out the bowls of the ladles. Bill also made the lathe that he used to manufacture the spinning wheels from raw wood that he cut and dried to his specifications.
