0051.0026: From Columbia River

Newspaper article with a letter from Expressman Stone describing camp conditions and spirits of miners on the Columbia River. Interesting...

BIG BEND DIGGINGS. – A Letter dated Lytton, August 5th, written by a trader to a merchant in this city, has the following:

“It will not be unpleasant to hear that we have now positive news from the Big Bend, and that the diggings are not only good but extensive.  Parties are going up to build flat boats on the lakes; several trains are actually in the woods cutting their way through.  Mr. Ladner has sent part of his mule train through light, and is boating his goods to the head waters.  I shall soon be able to give you further particulars as a friend of mine starts tomorrow with 32 packs.”  A gentleman who arrived yesterday by the Enterprise informs us that on his way from Cariboo he had an interview with Mr. Stone, who left Big Bend on the 31st July, and stated that there were about 120 men on Carnes and Gold Creek, which were about 40 miles apart.  The water was still too high to enable them to work to advantage, but the miners were sanguine that when the water receded they would make good wages.
