RAILROAD NOTES (From the Wardner International)

            Contractor Egan has returned from the east.

            The work of laying steel has ceased for the present.

********

            New men are coming on the road now at the rate of 100 per day.

********

            There are 2500 men at work along the line for twenty miles west of Crows Nest lake.

********

            The heavy roads are making trouble for the contractors who are anxious to get in supplies.

********

            Mr. Smith, who has charge of the boarding cars, is receiving considerable praise for the efficient manner in which he is doing his work.

            D. McLeod, Cassin & McDonald, Major Bowles and Mr. Cass will close up their contracts north of Wardner early next month.

            The telegraph line will be put up as far as Wardner as rapidly as the work can be done.  The wire will be stretched to the trees for temporary use, and telegraph stations will be established every fifteen miles.  The line will be in operation to Wardner by May 1.

            W.L. McKenzie returned from a trip as far west as Kuskonook last Sunday, and is at work again at railroad headquarters.  He reports good work being done between Wardner and Kuskonook, but says the tote road is very bad in places between Moyie and Kootenay lake.

            Between Lethbridge and Macleod on the Crows Nest road within a distance of sixteen miles, there are sixteen bridges.  It is here that Mr. Haney has been at work the past six weeks, giving his personal attention to the construction.  This part of the work is now completed and trains will be running between the two towns in a few days.

            J.R. Turnbull had a serious time at Egan’s camp on his return east.  He got a balky horse there and was thrown off and slightly injured.  He then concluded to try a team again, and just as he started the horses became frightened and ran away, breaking up the buggy and leaving Mr. Turnbull in a somewhat dilapidated condition.
