Peter Cooper's "Tom Thumb" - North America's First Locomotive

Peter Cooper's "Tom Thumb" on the Baltimore & Ohio R.R. This locomotive was built in 1829 and used on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was the first locomotive built in North America. It was invented by Peter Cooper, founder of Cooper Union, New York, and so impressed the backers of the proposed Baltimore & Ohio Railroad with the value of steam that they were willing to go ahead and organize the B. & O. R.R. This reproduction locomotive circles the big loop track at the Fair of the Iron Horse, Baltimore, each day under its own steam.
