Airport Upgrades

AIRPORT WORK LEVELING BUMPY FIELD. – Southern Section Undergoing Rapid Plastic Operations: To Be Completed In November.

            Clouds of dust rising over the airport each day indicate the intensive work under way there with tractors, scrapers, trucks and men undoing the work of the glacial age in leveling out the southern thousand feet of the fields, to be completed in November.

            Worden’s Transfer last week purchased a new Diesel Caterpillar Tractor, RD-4 which has been put to work down there in scraping and hauling.

            Cancellation of the official opening of Lethbridge’s new million dollar airport, principal point between Vancouver and Winnipeg, from September 10 to June, 1939, has left the start of TCA’s scheduled passenger and mail run on the western leg in doubt.  No explanation of the cancellation has been given, it may be because of the incomplete surface work on the runways.

            The eight Lockheed 14’s built during the past year at Glendale, Col., are the planes for the schedule runs once the airline begins operations, and are the ones which are making the flights over here each night.  They require very large landing space.  The off-schedule plane which flew over Tuesday afternoon was one of the last of these planes to be delivered and was on its way to Winnipeg from Vancouver where it was delivered.

            Inspector of Civil Aviation J.R. Robertson, superintendent on the western section, was a visitor here Tuesday on his way through from Vancouver to Regina.  He was accompanied by Mrs. Robertson.

            Captain Jack Palmer of Invermere who brought down a sick child from the Windermere Valley Wednesday, left Friday afternoon to return to Windermere.  He expects to bring his plane to Cranbrook for the Pioneers’ Reunion next week.
