J. WALLACE HERE 33 YEARS PASSES AWAY. – Pioneer Brickmaker, Cranbrook District.

Joseph Wallace, aged 77 years and a highly respected resident of the district for 33 years, passed away Monday morning at his home, three miles from town on the new Kimberley road, after being ill for several months with cancer.  Deceased was born in Singhamton, Ontario, where he followed the occupation of brickmaker, having started back in the days when bricks were made by hand.  He came west to Cranbrook with his family in 1900, and again embarked in the brickmaking business, and followed that occupation here for a number of years.  Part of the time he had a brickyard of his own, but at times had charge of other yards, both near town and at surrounding points.  Brick for the Cranbrook post office building, the Hanson block, and other brick buildings in town were made under his supervision.  He also had charge of making the brick used in connection with the building of the old Marysville Smelter.  The late Mr. Wallace is survived by two sons and six daughters.  They are Clark Wallace, residing on the farm near town, Joseph Wallace, formerly of Hollywood, but now residing here; Mrs. A.H. Playel, Cranbrook; Mrs. Ralph Fitzpatrick, Kelowna; Mrs. D.A. Campbell, High River, Alberta; Mrs. P.A. McCallum, Fossett, Alberta; Mrs. J. Jolan, Virco, Sask.; and Mrs. Wilson, Detroit, Michigan.  His wife died about a year ago.  Ed Corbett living on the Mission road was his brother-in-law.  The funeral will be held this afternoon (Thursday) from the MacPherson undertaking parlors, with Rev. G.O. Black, pastor of the Baptist church officiating.
