Reporting on the shortage of railcars for lumber, with demand constantly increasing.

Everything Points Towards Its Immediate Construction.

The construction of the Kootenay Central railway, and the building of a smelter at Elko are matters in which the people of the Kootenay valley are especially interested.  They feel confident that they cannot be delayed but a short time.  It is felt that the opening of the Flathead reserve will be quickly followed by the construction of the Kootenay Central.  This will give a great stimulus to mining in the vicinity of Fort Steele, also in the Windermere district, where it is proven that very large and valuable ore deposits exists.

Much activity is manifested in the direction of the immense timber areas of the Kootenay valley.

We have been informed that an eastern syndicate have secured an option on C.P.R. timber in the vicinity of Canal Flat, and there is a strong probability that within 60 days arrangements will be perfected whereby a mill of large capacity will be installed on the Kootenay river near Canal Flat.  This is based to a considerable extent on the promise that the Kootenay Central Railway Company will commence immediate construction.  A recent telegram received at Steele during the past week from the east indicates that this promise will be kept, and it is quite probable that the long looked for railway will be under construction inside of 90 days.
