Kettle Valley Railway Locomotive

CPR 5758 - This locomotive was too large for sidings and was only used on straight line runs. Largest locomotive ever used on the Kettle Valley Railway. Joe Smuin comments on the information attached to this photo: As a Kettle Valley Railway historian and author of two books on the KVR, I have to tell you that the information about Engine No. 5758 is not quite on the mark. First of all, perhaps we should clarify that the KVR covered the territory from Midway to Spence's Bridge or Odlum, B.C., with a few short miles at Grand Forks, B.C. The Boundary Subdivision (Nelson-Midway) was NEVER part of the KVR or subsequent KV Division. Neither was the territory to the east of Nelson. As for No. 5758, that locomotive indeed did see assignment to pusher service at Penticton. However, it was never a KVR locomotive because the 5700 series locomotives did not get to Penticton until 1939, long after the KVR was absorbed into the CPR's BC District in 1931. It would be accurate to reword this caption to state that some 5700 series locomotives saw assignments to both Kettle Valley Division and Lootenay Division service. In no way can it be accurately stated that 5758 or any other 5700 series locomotive was 'a Kettle Valley Railway' engine.

CPR Locomotive #1279

Locomotive #1279 - One of the Kettle-Valley Railway locomotives photographed at Lethbridge, AB. Kettle Valley Railway historian Joe Smuin writes: This information is completely incorrect. Neither this locomotive nor any of its type was ever assigned to either the KVR or the subsequent Kettle Valley Division. Locomotives of this specific class did work from Nelson east, but nowhere near KV territory. Please remember that the Kettle Valley Railway ran from Midway, B.C. west to either Spence's Bridge or Odlum, B.C. The KVR was absorbed into the BC District of the CPR in 1931. Except for a few miles at Grand Forks, B.C., no territory east of Midway was ever part of the KVR or subsequent KV Division.

Negotiating the Frank Slide

Kettle-Valley Railway passenger car coming through the Frank Slide in 1949. Joe Smuin has added: This is a passenger train, possibly a 'mixed train' which may have in fact transited Kettle Valley territory much further west - assuming the train is eastbound and a passenger train. If it is a mixed train (looks like a caboose on the tail-end) then it will not have been as far as KV territory. Please remember that the Kettle Valley Railway ran from Midway, B.C. west to either Spence's Bridge or Odlum, B.C. The KVR was absorbed into the BC District of the C.P.R. in 1931. Except for a few miles at Grand Forks, B.C., no territory east of Midway, B.C. was ever part of the KVR or subsequent KV Division.
