John Galbraith, Man of Vision

This 1928 'Cranbrook Courier'portrait shows John Galbraith, founder of Galbraith's Ferry and first pre-emptor of land on the Cranbrook townsite. Realizing there was more gold in miners' pockets than in the hills, he established a ferry across the Kootenay River in 1865, then claimed the land above it as the townsite of what became Fort Steele. In 1885 he moved to Victoria, dying two years later.

8 Pen and Ink Drawings of Fort Steele

The Ferry Office at Fort Steele. Part of this log building dates back to the Wild Horse Creek Gold Rush of 1864-66. Built by John Galbraith and used first as the Ferry Office, it later served as Post Office and residence. John Galbraith operated the ferry from 1864 until 1870. Robert Galbraith then took over and operated it until the first bridge was built in 1888.

The Ferry you see is the one that crosses over to our side of the Columbia River. It is only about half a mile below this ferry that the river joins with the Kootenay River. Its very pretty here Byron, especially in spring."

Castlegar-Robson Ferry Slip

A view of the old ferry slip approach (Castlegar side) off Columbia Avenue with the old Donnan store building. The jail building was originally located in behind the store. A a contributor adds: Indeed, this was Bert & Jesse Donnan's store back in the day. Originally the property was owned by Fredricksons, who ran a store behind this building that was attached to their residence. It was called "The Cozy Corner". The property was a narrow strip of land that was developed a bit further beyond than just this. They also had "Cozy Cabins", several free standing rentals, as well as a camping area. Situated midway between the Cozy Corner store and residence and the Cozy Cabins & Campsite, was once a brick factory, that predated all of the aforementioned.
