Home of Bill Perepelkin

Jan. 1987, the home of Bill Perepelkin at 80 Columbia Ave. This house was built circa 1911 and originally owned by Jimmy Davidson. C. Salekin added: Caption is correct. Just to add though, after Jim Davidson, Ross & Kate Defoe lived here. The house behind was owned by the Brodmans.

Sproat's Landing

Named after Gilbert Malcolm Sproat, a Kootenay gold commissioner in 1888. Judge Sproat originally came to British Columbia to acquire timber suitable for sailing ship masts. Located in the area that subsequently held Waldie's Sawmill on the Columbia River across from Castlegar, B.C. Sproat's Landing was port-of-call for paddlewheelers travelling between Trail and the Arrow Lakes.

Castlegar-Robson Ferry Slip

A view of the old ferry slip approach (Castlegar side) off Columbia Avenue with the old Donnan store building. The jail building was originally located in behind the store. A a contributor adds: Indeed, this was Bert & Jesse Donnan's store back in the day. Originally the property was owned by Fredricksons, who ran a store behind this building that was attached to their residence. It was called "The Cozy Corner". The property was a narrow strip of land that was developed a bit further beyond than just this. They also had "Cozy Cabins", several free standing rentals, as well as a camping area. Situated midway between the Cozy Corner store and residence and the Cozy Cabins & Campsite, was once a brick factory, that predated all of the aforementioned.

Castlegar Jail

Columbia Ave looking Southeast, with the first jail located just behind the visible Donnan store building. Ruth Parfeniuk added: The Castlegar jail was never located behind Donnan's store. There were some tiny tourist cabins there, auto court as they were called. The jail was about a city block up the road (behind the photographer). There was a residence for the head of the detachment with the tiny jail behind the house.
