Mr. Amil Burnett, Mrs. Burnett & family outside their home in Rossland, BC c.1913
The home in this picture was constructed around the year 1900 by the British American Mining Company to be occupied by the Superintendents of the Josie Mine in Rossland. It was located on a bench just north of their Josie Mine Shaft. In this photo is the second Superintendent Mr. Amil Burnett, his wife, his children Fred, Harold & Amy. Mr & Mrs. Burnett were Americans. Mr. Burnett came to Rossland from the mines in Colorado and Mrs. Burnett came from Kentucky. Mr. Burnett was a big man being 6 foot 4 inches tall. He was very knowledgeable, capable, clever miner. His weakness was liquor and he would often be in the mines while under the influence. His family were at all times greatly concerned and would arrange for others to keep a watch on him. One day he reported to work and after a short while disappeared, never to to seen or heard of again. The mines were searched and the open pits in the surrounding hills were investigated. It was never learned whether or not he met with foul play, did away with himself or simply left the country. His eldest son Fred was a very creative boy. In the late fall of 1914 just after the commencement of the 1914-1918 world war Fred constructed a substantial box kite. He was able to get it aloft over the city from his position above the mines. As the war had just commenced a few months before and stories began to filter into the newspapers that a instrument called a flying machine was being used on the war front in France. For an hour or two Fred's box kite so startled the citizens that the local jeweler cleared the valuables from his display windows and stuffed them into his safe until is was ascertained what the object could be flying in the Rossland skies. The Rossland Miner of that date contained the story of Fred's box kite and the anxiety and concern that was created for a couple of hours.
