Deer Park

            The little town of Deer Park on lower Arrow lake seems to be improving under the influence of the travel that at the present time is sweeping up and down the lakes.  The overflow from the new town of Brooklyn across the lake finds good accommodations at the hotels of this place and many take advantage of the good meals and clean beds.

            One of the picturesque features of this place is “Dad” Allen, who has a camp across the creek, where he is amusing himself and the world at large with his reminiscences of early days, anecdotes of the men who inhabited and cultivated his part of the earth.  “Dad” says his business is good, watching his pack horses eat the tender grasses of the hillsides.

            Mrs. Luxton has one of the best vegetable gardens in the Park.  An old barrel serves a useful purpose by holding a number of strawberry plants.  The vines creep over the top and through the many holes bored in the side and are loaded with nice ripening fruit.  This soil must be exceptionally good or the gardener an expert for the vegetables look wonderfully well.  The front of the building is tastefully ornamented with flowers.

            Several came from below to spend a day on the lake fishing.  Trout are biting freely and many fine ones are being hooked.  Two gentlemen spent Sunday on the lake with Robert Kyle.  The water was very rough and the day disagreeable, but a good catch was made nevertheless.  A little encouragement by the steamboat company and the Park people would make this point a favorite with the fisherman.

            W. Burgh is building some fine boats for the trade.  Mr. Burgh was at one time a resident of Trail.  Since coming to the Park he has built a number of fine boats, also has prospected.  He has the Cube, near Brooklyn, a rich copper ledge assaying 11 per cent copper.

            The post office will have considerable business since the coming of Brooklyn.  Many are wondering if an office will be established at Brooklyn.  The postal law forbids the establishment of an office within a radius of five miles of one another.  The two towns are less than two miles apart.

            “Dad” Allen says when a man works and says nothing everything must be alright.  He says there are three Palousers and a bay horse working a claim near here and not a one has said a word about it.  Some of our people are considering the advisability of purchasing a naptha launch for pleasure parties and ferry purposes.
