LOCAL MENTION.

            In connection with the protest against the election of Mr. Bostock as member of Parliament for Yale-Cariboo a cross petition has been filed at Kamloops against J.A. Mara, the defeated candidate.  The petition asks for his disqualification on the usual general grounds.

            Don’t fail to attend the Firemen’s ball at Trail on the evening of Oct. 5^th.

            Miss Bunting has been appointed school teacher at Trail.  There are now at that point 100 children of school age.  School Inspector Wilson has gone up to see to the organization of the school.  He will visit other Kootenay points before returning. – Vancouver World.

            F. Aug. Heinze has returned from a several months trip to Europe.  It is not known whether he succeeded in floating the six million of bonds with which to build railroads in British Columbia, or not, but he evidently had a royal time.  He says that Englishmen are loth [sic.] to make investments in this country until after election – that it is the general opinion over there that silver will succeed.   Whether or not, after election is over good times will be had.  The demand for copper is good and increasing, and he looks for a great consumption of that metal as well as a general revival in mining – Butte Mining World.

            Wm. Claffy returned Tuesday from a prospecting trip on the south fork of the Beaver, and brought with him some fine specimens of ore from that locality.  The ledges are all large and well defined.  It being a new district there is not much being said as to values, but the camp is a promising one and work on trails and bridges will begin in a few days.

            Thomas Black and Dan Rice came in on Wednesday’s boat from Beaver Creek, where they have been working on the British Chief group.  The report 15 inches of ore in No. 1 shaft at 10 feet; 4 feet of ore in No. 2 shaft at 11 feet; 12 inches in shaft No. 3 six feet deep; and 32 inches and widening at 11 feet depth in shaft No. 4.  These four shafts represent three veins, No. 3 and 4 being on the same vein.  Every piece tried from each shaft has given assays no lower than $10 and reaching to $30 per ton.  Shaft No. 1 and 2 running highest in silver and 3 and 4 carrying mostly gold, but taken together it shows an average of $18 per ton value and crude tests of concentrating the ore has been made with very good results.  Stamps or roller mills with frue vanners [?] can reduce 10 tons into one.  The ore is in a good gangue, carrying a small per cent of galena, iron, zinc and copper, and concentrating easily and readily.  Fifteen hundred feet from the group, the North Fork of the Beaver runs a strong stream of water the year around.  Fuel is plenty and convenient if required and as the group (5 claims) lie within two miles of the Nelson & Fort Sheppard railroad (near Beaver Meadows) it looks as if the owners were among the fortunate owners of Trail Creek.
