THE LOCAL GRIST.

            G.O. Buchanan sent a scow load of lumber to the new town of Sanca Tuesday.

            Frank J. Cutler, of the Deadman, and the Noble Five partners, are in Spokane putting the final touches to consolidation.

            A. Whealler, the barrister, and W.H. J. Holmes, the civil engineer, have each taken offices in the McGregor building, above Byers’ store.

            Merchants are putting in heavy stocks of goods, anticipating a heavy trade this fall.  The amount of powder which will be consumed this year will be double that of last year, and other goods in proportion.  H. Giegerich has en route two cars of giant powder, which are expected daily, and it is not likely that this will carry him through to January 1^st.

            The C. & K. Co.’s steamship Nelson went out of commission last Monday and is now in dock at Nelson to receive a general overhauling.  When she comes out she will be to all appearances a new boat.  The Nelson has been in constant service for nearly four years.

            J.C. Wagner has gone to the Wagner group to begin operations with six men.  He will necessarily go in from Trout Lake City, but long and deep are the curses he heaps upon the head of Napoleon Fitzstubbs, who persistently refuses to open the Lardo-Duncan route.

            Hugh McDonald and J.E. Bigham were given separate contracts for clearing the stumps on B avenue.  McDonald takes from Fifth street to the east side of the Presbyterian church, and Bigham the balance to Third street.  The contracts aggregate $140.  The work has been commenced.

            The petition asking for government aid in the building of a hospital at Kaslo for the accommodation of the Slocan country and lake points, was forwarded Wednesday by Mayor Green to the premier.  It was extensively signed by people throughout the Slocan and at Ainsworth and Pilot Bay.
