Kate Martin Hits Olympic Speed

CRANBROOK GIRL HANGS UP RECORD – Kate Martin, of Slaterville, Qualifies for Olympic Games.

            Slaterville upheld its laurels at the track meet held May 24^th on the C.A.A.A. grounds.  There is a certain jealousy of pride in the Slaterville kids.  It first broke out in the ranks of the Rosebuds, the hockey team from that center.  It blossomed forth in all its glory when race No. 28 was called, the high school girls 50-yard dash.  Nelson sent forth their speediest girl sprinter in the person of Miss Dorothy Vyse, a clever runner.  Slaterville banked on No. 25, otherwise Kate Martin, and they played a safe bet.  When Kate breasted the tape with four stop watches recording her time, it was found she had clipped 3/5 second off the world’s record, according to Spalding’s official report book.  The best record in 1926 was 6 1/5 seconds, which Kate stepped off in 5 3/5.  The record will be protected and an effort made to enter the girl in the Olympic races.
