Fernie Rotary

            The first visit of Frank H. Lamb, Governor of Rotary District No. 1, comprising Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, to the Local Rotary Club, took place yesterday and was the occasion of a grand banquet in the Fernie Hotel last evening.  There were over fifty guests, including the members and their wives and four or five visiting Rotarians from Lethbridge.  The evening was taken up with songs, music and addresses and the presentation of the charter by Governor Lamb who spoke for over an hour on the great subject of Rotary.

            The final judging in the Fernie Beautiful Contest, held this year by Fernie Rotary Club, was finished on Saturday morning.  The judges were highly pleased with the response the people gave to the contest, and with the splendid showing made the first season by the contestants.  Apparently, even those who did not enter the contest had followed the lead of their neighbors who had entered, and the result had been a campaign of planting and painting that has brightened up the town considerably.  In Class 1. – for the home and grounds of best appearance in the city of Fernie the following awards were made: Mr. Alfred Baker, 118 MacPherson Ave., 1^st prize of $35.  Mr. James Maltman, 13 Dalton Ave., 2^nd prize of $10.  Mr. William Reynolds, 98 Howland Ave., 3^rd prize of $5.  In Class 2. – For the home and grounds showing the greatest improvement in appearance during the season, the awards were: Mr. Fred Kennedy, 72 MacPherson Ave., 1^st prize $35, Mr. Alex. Sherwood, Baker Ave., 2^nd prize $10.  Mr. G. Golightly,90 MacPherson Ave., 3^rd prize $5.  In Class 3. – For the home and grounds in West Fernie showing the best appearance and the greatest improvement in appearance during the season, the prizes were awarded to: Mr. J. Carnock, Colclough Ave., 1^st prize $15.  Mr. Walter Woodhouse, 2^nd prize of $6.  Mrs. John Bella, Hand Ave. 3^rd prize of $4.  Besides these awards the judges have commended Mr. James Wilson, 30 Dalton Ave., for his very fine garden.  Mr. Wilson has one of the finest, if not the finest, vegetable and small fruit gardens in Fernie.  Mr. W.G. Arnold, 147 Pellatt Ave., has also had a very good garden but it was a little past its best when the final judging was made.
