COUNCIL BRIEFS –
A new addition will almost double the size of the
At last week’s meeting, city council approved architect Shigeru Amano’s drawings of the addition.
The addition will comprise about 5,700 square feet and it will be two stories high. It will be attached to the north end of the present city hall, taking up the area where the fountain is now.
“There’s no doubt in our minds that the addition will suffice for at least 10 years,” said city administrator Bland Hoover.
Amano said that the cost is $45 per square foot, but inflation is likely to push that figure up. Council has budgeted $320,000, including architect’s fees, for the project.
The addition is designed to look remarkably like the present structure. Amano has brightened the hall’s appearance by adding awnings on the windows.
Amano said the addition would take five or six months to construct but the difficulty in obtaining building materials might slow the job down.
Mayor Ty Colgur said the city would try to get provincial or federal financial aid for the project, but he was not optimistic.
