0052.0005: Big Bend Mines Declared Rich

Newspaer article including a translated letter written by a German prospector to encourage friends to join him in Big Bend...

THE CAPITAL OF MONTANA. – From Cottonwood I journied into Blackfoot City, a distance of thirty miles, and thence to Helena, my present location.  I had expected to find a flourishing little mining town, but was surprised to find a city four or five times larger than Walla Walla and containing a population of perhaps ten times more people, with fine water works through the principal streets and everything in regular ship-shape city style.  There are six or eight wholesale houses here doing business, with a capital of from one to three thousand dollars.  You would be surprised to see the town, and then be told that the first houses were erected last March, but such is the case.  I had always thought that our people were fast, but I assure you that we are nowhere compared to this tender foot population. – Con. W.W. Statesman
