Jackson's Wall

SOME OBSERVATIONS:

            During the civil war in the United States there was a famous Confederate general by the name of Jackson.  He was a great fighter, and one of his battles was won with his back against a stone wall.  Ever afterwards he was known as “Stonewall” Jackson.

            Just now in Cranbrook a little battle is raging over a certain stone wall and involves a man named Jackson.  Funny how history repeats itself.

            Our Jackson is a fighter, too, and a nice thing about it, he fights in the open – no whispering with him.

            Thirty years ago, after severing his connection with the Cranbrook Hotel, Angus Morrison and his wife lived in a house on Hanson avenue, and kept a few roomers and boarders.  One of these was a telegraph operator – a bright, studious young fellow who always seemed to be striving to better his condition.  Recently Angus happened to be in town on the day a special car with several high C.P.R. officials on board pulled in.  He heard the name Cotterell, and casually remarked to Alderman Attridge that thirty years ago a young fellow by the name of Charlie Cotterell roomed at his place.  Morrison was a bit shy, but Mr. Attridge insisted on the two men meeting.  Sure enough it was C.A. Cotterell, superintendent of C.P.R. lines in British Columbia.  They had not met since these early days, but they remembered each other and had a friendly chat.
