SMITH CREEK STORM SEWER COMPLETED. – Takes Care Of Surplus Water From Nearby Marsh. – Work Begun In 1929. – Project Handled From Revenue of City And Carried Forward During Slack Periods of Time.
Water was turned into Section 5, the final link of the Smith Creek storm sewer, last Monday. The water made its way through this last section in eighteen minutes, and the whole system is now working very satisfactorily.
Roughly, the length of this storm sewer is 4,900 feet, and it is built of 30-inch reinforced concrete pipe. Work on the project was begun in 1929, and was carried on from time to time as conditions warranted. It has been built from revenue of the city, and without the necessity of a debenture bylaw. The sewer is serving its purpose well, for the water is carried off under ground instead of through open ditches as before. These ditches were a source of considerable trouble at times on account of water backing up and flooding and damaging the lower sections of the town especially.
The sewer takes care of the overflow water from the marsh just south of town. This water is diverted from the creek to the concrete pipeline at Durick avenue, follows along Edwards street to Norbury avenue, across the children’s playground park to Fenwick and on to Garden, crossing Baker street and continuing down Garden avenue between the Central school and the Manual training school and on down to the flats below town. The last section of the pipeline is being covered, and also the old ditch crossing
The Smith Creek storm sewer project has been carried on under the supervision of D. Philpot, city superintendent.
