TO REBUILD FOUNTAIN IN ROTARY PARK. –

The ornamental drinking fountain that has stood in Rotary Park and children’s playground for the past thirteen years is now a tumbled heap of masonry, shortly to be replaced by a new fountain of different design.  City workmen recently completed demolition of the old structure erected by the Daughters of the Empire from surplus funds remaining from collections during the Great War.

The I.O.D.E. was very active at that time and did excellent work collecting money and forwarding comforts to the boys overseas.

The fountain has been out of commission for a number of years, having suffered damage from frost heaving.  It was a massive stone structure and its tearing down proved no easy task.  The fact that it stood upon an inadequate foundation is believed the cause of its receiving damage.

When rebuilt later the name-plate identifying the I.O.D.E. with the undertaking will again be set in place.

An interesting relic recovered from the old structure was a jar containing an issue of The Cranbrook Courier dated September 3rd, 1925, a list showing the personnel of The Courier staff at that time, also a number of other small souvenirs.  These had been placed there when the fountain was erected.  When again brought into light of day recently it was found the contents of the jar had sustained considerable damage from water.
