FORT STEELE LIBERAL ASSOCIATION – The permanent organization of this Association was completed at a meeting held on the 28^th June, by the election of the following officers: - President, F.P. Norbury, J.P.; Vice President, T. McNaught; Sec-Treasurer, Hugh Watt, M.D.; Advisory Committees – Messrs. Cumming, Durick, Dempsey and Judson Langley.

            Among other business transacted the following resolutions were carried unanimously:

            -“That this Association express its strong disapproval of the manner in which the new mail contract was let; after calling for tenders for a weekly service, accepting none of such tenders, but letting the contract privately to a different individual under a different contract.”

            -“That there being now over 3,000 people receiving mail at the Fort Steele office, this Association strongly condemns the proposal to give Fort Steele only a fortnightly service for the winter beginning from October; that in its opinion the service should be twice a week until railway construction is complete.”

            -“That as fifty per cent of the correspondence going from Fort Steele is with the south, that being the quicker and more natural route for such correspondence, it is the opinion of this Association that a subsidy should be paid for a weekly mail service to Tobacco Plains, Montana, to connect with the semi-weekly post from there to Kalispell; that by so doing there will be prevented a considerable loss of revenue now caused by the irregular conveyance of such correspondence southward.”
