CHINESE IN CRANBROOK

The Chinese problem is at the present time one of the most serious questions that the statesmen of the world have to contend with.  To bring the matter nearer home, although it is but of small moment, comparatively, the Chinese question is liable to yet be a serious one in Cranbrook.  There is at the present time in Cranbrook a number of Chinese stores, a restaurant and a jeweler, to say nothing of innumerable laundries – there is not a laundry in town conducted by white people.  Aside from the laundries – which are patronized by all alike from sheer necessity – most of the white people who patronize the Chinaman are the very ones who are most affected by Chinese and Japanese labor, the laborers themselves; the very ones whom it would be natural to suppose would boycott the Chinese.

The only way you can get the Chinaman out of business is to boycott him – you can not, in this land of civilization, club him to death or shoot him down.  “John” is now doing business on Baker street, and it is high time some organized movement be inaugurated to make it impossible for a number of Chinamen, or any of them, to live in Cranbrook – devoid of all violence, however.
