Cranbrook Growth

A CITY OF HOMES. –

            Even during the winter months Cranbrook has been growing.  In that suburb to the north, between the Sash and Door factory and the King Lumber Mills, known as “Little Scotland,” a number of new dwellings have been erected during the last few months.  J. McDonald has built a neat cottage just north of Thomas Leask’s residence and alongside of him J. Mackay and A. Hood have each built themselves comfortable homes.  A little farther to the west H. Greysen and C.H. Knocke have both built cottages.  The people of “Little Scotland” are very anxious that the Water Supply company should run a main to supply them with water.  At the present time the pipe line stops just opposite the home of Thomas Leask.  “Commodore” Andrew Leask has built two nice cottages nearly opposite his son Thomas’ house.

            On the other side of the track, just past the school buildings, Mr. Chalmer, purchasing agent for the General Trunk Pacific railway, is just finishing a very neat bungalow and next door J. Brechen has just built a cottage.  On the south side of the railway in the direction of the electric light power house, several new houses have gone up.  Conductor Shackleton has built two exceedingly neat cottages.  S. Baldwin has built a very roomy and handsome residence and also a cottage.  R. Sallal and J. Sims have each built homes in this district.  George Leask’s handsome home on Edwards street is nearing completion and will be amongst the finest dwellings in the city.  Cranbrook has never stopped growing in the ten years of her existence and be it summer or winter, the building still goes on.  It is interesting to note also that when a dwelling is built in Cranbrook it is because the dwelling is needed to live in.  So far there has been practically no speculative building in this city.
