0050.0471: Chinese Commission

Evidence before Chinese Commission in Nanaimo again shows the Chinese have invaded every area of the work force, with dozens...

The commission appointed to inquire into the effect of the Chinese on the B.C. labor market has completed its investigation in so far as Victoria is concerned.  The evidence given before that commission will not be pleasant reading for the people of British Columbia.  It was conclusively established that the presence of the Chinese in this Province has practically closed every avenue of industry to white labor.  Where a few years ago it was possible for white men and women to secure profitable employment, Chinese competition has congested the labor market to that extent that for one vacancy there are twenty applicants.  This of course results in disastrous competition, so that wages have been reduced far below the living rate, and security of permanency of employment is absolutely out of the question.  This condition of affairs prevails in every line of industry.  White women when they do secure work as servants, are placed on the level of the Chinese, a condition of affairs repellent to the instincts of the white race.  Now it is shown what Chinese competition has done, the question arises, what will the Government do about it?
