0050.0439: Oriental Labour

Toronto Telegram voices its opinion on British Columbias troubles with oriental cheap labor.

Last week the Great Northern Railway landed another shipload of Japs here, and the streets are thronged with Orientals.  It is freely stated that a certain politician is responsible for the great influx of these people, who are being rushed in for the construction of the road over the Fraser River.  It is further alleged that a prominent politician promised the speedy construction of this road, and if the railway company employs the Japs it should give the anti-Japanese – Chinese agitations big boost in certain quarters.  While there may be no foundation in this report, it must be confessed that some politicians will do things which are not above suspicion, consoling themselves with the iniquitous doctrine that the end justifies the means.
