LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
WOULD RE-OPEN GYMNASIUM
The Editor,
Dear Sir – Having been approached by parties in town who are interested in the formation of an athletic association, the writer during the last ten days, has been gathering a few statistics relative to the cost of again opening the gymnasium and swimming pool.
I interviewed Mr. Gill, the owner, last week and he will rent the building together with its privileges and paraphernalia for what it cost him for rent and insurance.
The idea seems to be to organize the association and use the gym, as a club headquarters, for the Ball Team, Hockey Team, or any other team which now is, or may hereafter be organized.
The writer would welcome a chance to place this before the town, at a public meeting, in the near future and for that purpose would invite suggestions as to time and place for a meeting.
I have a schedule all worked out relative to cost, etc., which seems feasible but which I expect would be criticized very freely, but this criticism is just what I would like to have a meeting for.
If the association could see its way clear to do its own physical instruction, and part of its own work in regard to caretaking, etc., it would materially reduce the cost of operation, in fact this is a business man’s proposition and should be handled as such.
It would be necessary to have about the equivalent of 100 adult members at $10.00 per year, but dues could be paid monthly as the association, having no assets, could have no liabilities, and would have to be run on a cash basis. This matter can be gone into further however at the meeting.
When first the matter was broached it was only contemplated to open the gym, but since then a much broader and comprehensive arrangement is in contemplation, namely, to organize an association to be known as the “Cranbrook Athletic Association,” which shall embrace the whole district and use the gym for its headquarters.
There is probably no town in the Pass which has as good a foundation for such a club, and the privilege of having such a first class building as headquarters, which only needs a very few repairs to put it in first class shape, is something every town should consider a great privilege, and show its appreciation in some tangible form, other than to let it lie idle as it has for the last three years.
Without going further into the matter at the present time, I would like to state in closing, that I am willing, for the present, to continue the work which is now started, and to do all in my power to organize this association, and as soon as it is fairly launched the association will naturally want to elect its own officers and secretary.
We hope to be able to make a definite announcement next week.
G.D. Brown.
