Indians Observe Corpus Christi

INDIANS OBSERVE CORPUS CHRISTI - Attend Church in Morning; Form Procession
in Afternoon.
Sunday last, in observance of the Church festival of Corpus Christi,
the Kootenay Indians from all parts of the district congregated at the St.
Mary's Indian Mission, members of the tribe from the Tobacco Plains,
Creston and Windermere reserves, participating in the annual religious
ceremonies. At 10 a.m. the Indians attended church in a body where the
Rev. Father Lepine, O.M.I., held a high mass. In the afternoon, as has
been their custom for many years, the tribesmen formed in grand procession,
and led by their spiritual advisors, marched from the church to the school.
The balance of the day was devoted to sports, a miniature stampede
affording the young braves an opportunity to display their skill in
horsemanship and to indulge in tribal games. A large number of interested
spectators from Kimberley and other points in the district attended the
ceremonial.
