Kaslo News: 0054.0135

One of the novel sights connected with Kaslo’s building boom is a big Indian characteristically clad – wearing a big stab-knife, long hair, etc. – who is engaged in piling lumber at one of the large buildings.

The Canadian Pacific Mining and Milling Company is building a concentrator at Woodbury point on the lake.  W.G. Bryant, of Cartersville, Missouri, has the contract and G.O. Buchanan is supplying the lumber.

The Kansas City smelter people are now said to be negotiating in earnest for the Pilot Bay smelter, but nothing definite can as yet be learned.  It is reported, too, that orders have been received at the smelter from the Hendryx management, directing that everything be placed in readiness for the resumption of operations at an early date.

Alex Begg, editor of the B.C. Mining Record, is here with his solicitor, Edward Ward.  Mr. Begg is preparing the last matter for a splendid sixty-page edition of his paper, in which all Kootenay towns will be represented with illustrated write-ups.  Mr. Begg’s paper is proving a great success, not more, however, than it deserves – it is doing a great work for Kootenay.

Kaslo should not be behind Sandon and New Denver.  The business men should get together and arrange a commercial club, where in snug quarters visiting strangers can be entertained, and where evenings can be spent pleasantly and profitably over good reading matter and in conversation.  The clubs of the above mentioned towns are bright spots in their social existence; both are well conducted.  A club is not only a great convenience to a business community but it gives a town tone.  Kaslo should have such a club.
