CRANBROOK TO APPLY FOR SPECIAL FUND. – Relief Money Will Apply On Wages Only. – Government Will Not Contribute to Any Scheme Which Does Not Involve Manual Labor. –

            The Cranbrook city council at its special meeting held last Friday evening took steps toward applying for a share of the federal government’s $20,000,000 relief fund, created recently under a special act.  The city superintendent was instructed to prepare the data so that the application could be made.  This will also include an application for $500 for direct relief.  The money applied for will help to cover the costs of backfilling on the Gold Creek water diversion project, alterations in the Slaterville water system and for improvements at the airport.

Allotment of Funds.

            From Victoria comes the information that fears of some municipalities that the government will not assist by paying any cost of unemployment work but wages were referred to in the public works department.  The federal and provincial government grants to municipalities under the relief scheme, it was explained, are intended to be used largely for wages, so as to benefit the largest possible number of unemployed men.  On this account, the government will not contribute to any scheme in which labor does not make up the bulk of the total expenditure.  That is to say, the government does not intend to pay for such equipment as steam rollers and expensive road machinery for the use of municipalities.  But it will allow its contribution to be used for ordinary expenses, such as the purchase of tools and similar ordinary costs entailed in road work.
