Cranbrook Policing: 0050.0143

PROVINCIAL CONSTABLES TAKE CHARGE. – Policing of The City Under New System. – Former Chief Halcrow and City Patrolmen Given Positions at Nearby Points in District. –

Everything is running smoothly in Cranbrook under the new policing system inaugurated on March 1st, when the change was made from the city’s own force to that of provincial police.  The two provincial men in charge of the city work are Constables W.S. Birrel and A.C. Brabason, who came here from the coast, working under the supervision of Sergeant Duncan, who has charge of the district.  The latter, having his headquarters here now, will be able to devote a good share of his time to city work along with his outside duties.

Ex-chief Dave Halcrow and patrolmen John Blezard and Wm. Kirkham have joined the provincial force.  Halcrow has been located temporarily at Canal Flat, while Constable Blezard is doing police duty at Golden and Constable Kirkham at Kimberley.

With Fernie under control of provincial police, it makes both incorporated cities in East Kootenay using this system, and brings the list of cities in the province thus served up to about fifteen.  Among these are Rossland, Ladysmith, Chilliwack, Port Alberni, Courtenay, Duncan, Prince George, Nanaimo, Port Coquitlam and Grand Forks.

This course was taken by Cranbrook’s council on the first of the year as a means of reducing the cost of carrying on the affairs of the city.  There is a proviso in the agreement whereby it can be terminated at the end of twelve months if not found satisfactory.  The saving to the municipal taxpayers is estimated at between $2,500 and $3,000 a year.

Cranbrook has handled its own police service since November 1st, 1905, when the city received its charter.  G.T. Rogers was the first mayor, and Corey Dow was the first chief of police.
