Opening Bull River: 0050.0028

Described by the Hon. W.K. Kiernan, Minister of Recreation and Conservation, as the finest of its kind in North America, if not the entire world, the Kootenay Trout Hatchery was viewed by over 600 people at the official opening day, Tuesday, June 21.

Rain threatened but held off during the brief but effective opening ceremony at the front of the building.  Dignitaries besides the Honourable Minister were: the Honourable W.W. Chant, Minister of Public Works; Mr. David B. Turner, Deputy Minister of Recreation and Conservation; Dr. J. Hatter, Director of Fish and Wildlife Branch; and A.E. Webb, Deputy Minister of Public Works.  Also present were Leo T. Nimsick, James Chabot and Harry McKay, members of the provincial legislature.

Introduction was by Mr. Chant, and Rev. J.C. Barton of Cranbrook gave the invocation.  Mr. Kiernan, who made the address, said “the building is a monument to our sense of the need for conservation.”

Justification for a structure of this type, he said was in the Province’s maturation and the necessity to provide future generations with a continuance of the bountiful wildlife which has been our heritage.

With a golden key, presented by the contractor A.E. Shockley, Mr. Kiernan unlocked the door of the hatchery and declared it officially open.  Simultaneously with the opening of the door, lighted fountains shot up from the pools surrounding the building.

Following visitors’ inspection of the impressive new building, refreshments were served to all present.

The hatchery is equipped for the hatching of 6,000,000 trout annually, to be used in re-stocking lakes and streams.  Water for the development of the fish is from Norbury Creek, augmented by two wells.

Visitors are welcome during visiting hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and eventually picnic facilities will be provided near the site.  The hatchery is expected to become a major tourist attraction in the area.
