Joint Club Council: 0050.0016

A Joint Service Club Council has been established to co-ordinate fund raising activities of the member clubs and to spearhead two or three major fund raising events annually for the new Cranbrook Swimming Pool.

Rick Spooner has been appointed chairman of the group which has five service clubs as founding members, Rotary, Lions, Kinsmen, Gyro and ACT.

The council also hopes to co-ordinate fund raising events of other community organizations wishing to assist in the swimming pool project.

These organizations can contact Mr. Spooner and representatives will be welcomed at the joint council meetings.

“We are not too concerned about the actual design of the pool, or the building of it, since this comes under the auspices of the Project Society,” said Mr. Spooner.  “Our main concern is the raising of funds and the co-ordination of efforts and activities to avoid overlapping.”

Cranbrook service clubs have rallied to the swimming pool cause with pledges of $33,300 already being made to the Cranbrook and District Recreational Project Society.

Gyro Club pledged $10,000 and this was followed by a $10,000 pledge over three years from the Lions Club and last week the Rotary Club pledged $10,000 over three years.  Earlier the Kinsmen Club pledged income from the Sam Steele Days car raffle, which will be about $3,000.  Cranbrook United Traders has also pledged $300.

At the first meeting of the Joint Council several ways of raising funds were discussed.  It was generally felt that, if possible, this group try for three projects involving the five service clubs.  This would be in addition to projects undertaken by the individual clubs.

One of the major projects could be a walkathon to be held in the spring.  Lions Club would look after the mechanics of the walkathon with help from the other clubs.

There was also some discussion on major sportsman dinner, such as held earlier this year in Creston when over $60,000 was raised for a new arena.
