POOL DESIGN APPROVED. - TWO-PHASE DEVELOPMENT PRESENTED BY SOCIETY.
City Council last night gave approval in principle to a “Z”-shaped swimming pool design submitted by the

Project Society President Ron Powell told council that since being formed four months ago his group had done much of the groundwork which will lead up to a major drive for membership and funds in the February-March period so that construction on a new pool can start in the spring.
Mr. Powell explained that the “Z”-shaped design seemed to answer all the needs of a community swimming pool at the most reasonable cost. One end of the “Z” would contain a wading area for smaller children while the other end would contain diving boards. This leaves the length of the pool open for swimming.
450 PEOPLE
The first pool would accommodate approximately 450 people which would be large enough to serve a community of 15,000.
“When we started to look at the cost of covering a pool of this size we found it would run 50 per cent more than the pool itself. Our Research and Development Committee came up with the unique idea of adding a smaller second pool as a second phase. Cost of this was about half of the cost of covering the larger pool and operation costs for the winter would be about half.
“If swimming comes on strong in
Mr. Powell said outside cost of the first phase is estimated at $250,000 and the second phase $185,000 for a total cost of $435,000. “This would provide two pools that would accommodate 620 people. To build one large pool to handle that volume and cover it would cost close to (p10) $700,000,” he explained.
OVERALL PLAN
Architects Fairbanks, Sawyer, Nixon and Browning have been engaged to provide some preliminary plans of the pool setup and also work along with Regional Planning Director Alfred Miller on planning the 13.25 acres the city owns next to
Architect Gerry Browning was present. He said he felt the design provided “the most efficient way to spend money on a pool. You get the luxury of a Cadillac and the mobility of an MG.”
Mayor George Haddad termed the concept “terrific” and other members of council agreed. The Project Society will now address all interested community organizations on the concept, Mr. Powell said.
