Steel Framing For Royal Bank Cranbrook, B.C. 1968

Building of the Royal Bank in Cranbrook, B.C. The steel girders are shown being hoisted into position on the new Royal Bank building on the corner of Baker and Cranbrook Streets. They were quickly put in place with the huge hoist and steel workers from Calgary. The new building will have the first elevator in a commercial building in Cranbrook aside form the old and new hospitals.

Royal Bank Building Sketch Cranbrook, B.C. 1968. This artist's conception depicts what the new Royal Bank of Canada building in Cranbrook will look like when it's completed sometime next July(1969). The new structure, which is being built at a cost of approximately half a million dollars, is located at the corner of Baker and Cranbrook streets. The modern three storey building will house Cranbrook's first commercial elevator.

R.E. Sang

R.E. Sang,Cranbrook businessman and mayor. R.E. Sang was born in Hamiota, Manitoba on August 17, 1897. He moved to Cranbrook, B.C. in 1918; he was the Mayor of Cranbrook for 15 years, he was also the Freeman of the City. R.E. Sang passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada January of 1968.

Cowpie Water Drainage

A photo depicting the run-off into Gold Creek and the Cranbrook water supply. The many irregularities on the ground are understood to be the ubiquitous "cow flop". No one seemed to know how or if it affected Cranbrook's water supply.

Cranbrook's NEW through streets

On Monday morning November 6, 1967, the following changes in the City's "through street" pattern will be made: 1. 11th Avenue from Baker Street to 11th Street South will be made a through street. 2. 4th Street South from 3rd Avenue to 14th Avenue will be made a through street. 3. 10th and 12th Avenues South will no longer be through Streets. 4. 7th and 14th Avenues will remain as through streets. This is the first phase in the adoption of the new traffic pattern for the City so please watch for and obey the new stop signs.

Moving Shibley's home to make way for the New Post Office Cranbrook, B.C. 1968

What do you do now?? The old home shown above is being moved to make way for a new post office, but the buyer must be very disappointed over the fact that it is going to be a very hard to keep in one piece all the way to its new location, because it started to split in two pieces before it had left its old foundation. The former Shibley home is located on 1st street and 10th Avenue across from St. Mary's Church.

The "Dead Duck" Debt building of the Cranbrook "Colonnade" 1966

Mayor George Haddad beams but Lloyd Hoole appears to be swallowing a remark he is reported to have made sometime ago in connection with shopping colonnade (Cranbrook Mall)at the east end of Baker Street. CKEK's station manager took a bit of razzing over his previous remark that the colonnade was a "dead duck" when mayor and council members met a week ago Tuesday to ratify the agreement that gave the shopping centre the green light. the dead duck opinion had Mayor Haddad a bit piqued at the time.

Past Zone Commander Edward Gummer here lays a wreath in memory of Canadians who died during the First and Second World Wars. The brief ceremony at the Cenotaph Saturday was part of the observance marking Vimy Ridge and V.E. Day. Following the parade to the Cenotaph veterans of both wars gathered at the Legion for a social.

New Cranbrook Hospital 1968

The new Cranbrook Hospital is now over 90% completed and hospital administrator L. Swenerton states a completion date is hoped for around the end of April. The official opening of the $400,000.00 structure will be held sometime in May according to tentative plans. When finished it will be one of the most modern hospitals on the continent.

Site Of Cranbrook "Colonnade" (Mall) 1966

The billboard here marks the site of the one and half million dollar Colonnade to be built in Central Park area at the east end of Baker Street. Agreement giving the green light to the centre was signed earlier this month.

Cranbrook International Airport 1968

Shown above is a dream come true for Cranbrook and district - our own jet age Cranbrook International Airport, now ready for the largest jets to land on its wide long strip, in an area of breathtaking mountain scenery. City council has announced an opening date for the end of the month, with an official opening later in the summer. Meanwhile, a temporary terminal building shown above will serve until a larger on is required.
